About Chad J. Brown

Chad is a seasoned Canadian tax and estate lawyer licensed in Alberta and Ontario focused on complex tax planning, corporate reorganizations, and estate matters since 2001. He regularly advises owner-managed businesses, professionals, and farming families on tax-efficient structures, succession planning, and business transitions.

In addition to his tax planning expertise, Chad has substantial experience in estate law, guiding clients through the development of tax-efficient estate plans and representing them in high-stakes estate litigation. His litigation work includes will challenges, dependants’ relief claims, and disputes involving executors, trustees, and beneficiaries.

Chad also has a robust tax controversy practice. He represents individuals, corporations, and trusts in disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency, advising clients through audits, objections, and appeals. He has appeared before both the Tax Court of Canada and the Federal Court in matters involving income tax, GST/HST, and director liability. His experience includes negotiating settlements, pursuing taxpayer relief and voluntary disclosures, and challenging complex reassessments.

In addition, Chad defends taxpayers charged with criminal tax offences such as tax evasion and fraud. His specialized understanding of the regulatory underpinnings of Canada’s tax system gives him a strategic advantage over conventional criminal defence counsel, enabling him to challenge the foundational tax assessments that support criminal charges. This dual perspective allows Chad to deliver a thorough and practical defence in both civil and criminal contexts.

Chad has also advised professional liability insurers and a territorial government on legislative reform related to property taxation. He is a graduate of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ In-Depth Tax Course and has completed numerous advanced tax seminars through the Canadian Tax Foundation. He lectured nationally on criminal tax evasion and tax dispute resolution for the Foundation.

With a deep understanding of both legal strategy and tax mechanics, Chad delivers practical, solution-oriented advice to clients facing complex personal and business tax matters.
